Keynote Speech III – by Julia Schaeper

Topic:
Designing for Better Healthcare—How Service Design helps to improve healthcare services in the UK

ABSTRACT

The UK National Health Service (NHS) is the fourth largest employer in the world with 1.4 million staff through a wide range of organisations, including hospitals, GP surgeries and ambulance services. NHS healthcare services are used by millions of people everyday who value the expertise of staff and ability to make patients feel better. The NHS is often referred to as a ‘national treasure’ yet at times it does not provide the best possible service to all of the people who need to use it. This results in inefficiencies, safety issues, a lack of personal care, and dissatisfaction. To make things worse in the current economic climate it is suggested that the NHS faces its greatest financial challenge in its history - a £25 billion funding gap over the next 2-3 years. One ambition is to radically innovate within the health system, changing it so that it becomes more efficient, personalised and participatory.

As Service Design continues to grow as a discipline addressing pressing needs and challenges in society as well as adding value to our service economies, Julia Schaeper's talk will center on how Service Design has been used to address some of the emerging healthcare demands. Drawing on her experiences in the NHS, and at Engine Service Design one of the world’s leading agencies in this field, Julia will discuss the background and key principles used in Service Design practice today. She will demonstrate how the NHS embedded service design to drive some of the essential healthcare improvements that are needed. Short case studies will highlight how using this approach within the NHS resulted in improved healthcare experiences as well as more efficient and productive systems that help to address the financial shortcomings.

She acted as the thought leader and key development agent for design methodologies that enable front line staff to improve their services and meet increasing healthcare demands. Besides achieving qualitative service improvements, efficiency & budget savings, Julia's work in the NHS resulted in the design and implementation of a number of large scale improvement programmes

Prior to joining the NHS Julia worked as Service Designer at Engine Service Design one of the world's leading service design consultancies.
